How to use the Word to PDF

  1. Choose a Word file (.docx) or drop it on the box.
  2. The document is laid out on A4 pages and opens in the editor. Scroll through to check it.
  3. Change anything that needs it: retype a paragraph, move a picture, add a page number or a signature.
  4. Press "Download PDF".

What comes across. Headings keep their level (larger, bold), paragraphs keep their bold, italic and underlined words, and links are shown underlined in blue. Bulleted and numbered lists keep their marks and indents, including lists inside lists. Tables keep their rows and columns, with a header row in bold when the document marks one. Pictures are placed at their natural size, or fitted to the page width when larger. The text in the PDF is real text: it can be selected, searched and copied.

What changes. File Perks reads the content of the document, not Word's page layout, so the PDF is laid out afresh: A4 pages with 2.5 cm (one inch) margins, in Carlito, a font with the same letter widths as Calibri, Word's usual font. The document's own fonts, text sizes, colours and line spacing are not kept, and neither are headers, footers, page numbers, text boxes, footnotes or pictures placed inside tables. Paragraphs that do not fit at the bottom of a page continue on the next one, and a table that runs over a page repeats its header row.

Check, then download. Because the result opens in the same editor as Edit PDF, you can fix anything before the file is made: double-click a paragraph to retype it, drag a picture, delete an empty page, or add page numbers and a signature. Nothing is final until you press Download.

Older files. Word files from before 2007 (.doc) use a different format that cannot be read here. Open such a file in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and save it as .docx first. A document protected with a password must be opened and saved without the password.

Good to know

  • Reads .docx files (Word 2007 and later); not .doc, .odt or .rtf.
  • The layout is made again on A4 pages: Word's own fonts, sizes, colours, headers and footers are not kept.
  • Pictures inside tables are left out, and the page says so.
  • Password-protected Word files cannot be read.

Frequently asked questions

Will my PDF look exactly like my Word document?

Not exactly. The words, headings, emphasis, lists, tables and pictures are kept, but the pages are laid out again with the editor's fonts. For an exact copy of Word's layout, use Word's own "Save as PDF" or print to PDF.

Is the text in the PDF searchable?

Yes. It is real text with the font embedded, so it can be selected, searched and copied.

Can I convert an Urdu document?

Yes. Urdu text is drawn with the Noto Naskh font. Check the line order of mixed Urdu and English paragraphs before downloading.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted in your browser; it never leaves your device.
