How to use the BMP to JPG

  1. Add one or more BMP files.
  2. Choose the JPG quality (85% suits most pictures).
  3. Press "Convert" and download the JPG files, one by one or as a ZIP.

Why BMP files are so large. A BMP usually stores every pixel as it is, three bytes each, with no compression at all: a 1920×1080 screenshot is about 6 MB as a BMP. JPG describes the same picture far more compactly, so the converted file is often ten to fifty times smaller, small enough to email, upload or send in a chat app.

When to choose this tool. Use BMP to JPG for photos and scans saved as bitmaps, and for pictures that must go into a form or website that only takes JPG. For screenshots of text, diagrams or anything with sharp edges and few colours, PNG keeps them crisper: convert with the Image Converter and choose PNG instead.

A worked example. A machine at a clinic exports scan_0042.bmp, 8.3 MB, and the patient portal accepts JPG up to 1 MB. Leave the quality at 85% and press Convert: you get scan_0042.jpg at the same width and height, with its new size shown on the result card. If it is still too large, the Image Compressor can aim at an exact size.

Good to know

  • BMP files with transparency (rare) are put on a white background, since JPG has none.
  • The picture keeps its width and height; use the Image Resizer to make it smaller in pixels.
  • Very large bitmaps are limited by the picture area this browser can draw, not by file size.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose quality?

JPG is lossy, but at 85–95% the difference from the BMP is very hard to see in photos and scans. Text and line drawings keep sharper edges as PNG.

How much smaller will the file be?

It depends on the picture; photos and scans usually shrink by ten times or more. The result card shows the real size before and after.

Can I convert many BMP files at once?

Yes, up to 100 at a time, and download them together as a ZIP.
