What a PDF really holds. A PDF places each line of text at a position on the page; it does not record paragraphs, columns or tables the way a Word file does. File Perks rebuilds the paragraphs from those positions: lines that are close together, start at the same place and share a size are joined, a word broken with a hyphen at the end of a line is put back together, and lines clearly larger than the body text become headings. Bold and italic come from the names of the fonts in the PDF.
Pictures are taken from the PDF at their own resolution and placed between the paragraphs where they appear on the page, at the size they were shown. Small marks such as rules and bullets are left out. A scanned page is one big picture, so it comes across as a picture: its words cannot be edited without OCR, which File Perks does not do, and the result says how many pages were like that.
What does not come across. The Word file is laid out by Word, not copied from the PDF, so text in several columns becomes one column, tables become lines of text (use PDF to Excel for tables), and the original fonts, colours, headers and footers are not kept. Each PDF page ends with a page break, and the document takes the size of the first page. For small changes to a PDF without leaving the PDF format, Edit PDF keeps the layout exactly.
Urdu and Arabic text is written as right-to-left paragraphs. How well it comes out depends on how the PDF stored it: some PDFs store Urdu letters in their shapes rather than as text, and those cannot be turned back into words.

Frequently asked questions
Will the Word file look like my PDF?
The words, their order, headings, bold and italic, and the pictures will be there. The exact layout will not: a PDF records where each line was placed, and Word lays text out its own way.
Can I convert a scanned PDF?
Its pages come across as pictures in the Word file. Turning a picture of text back into words needs OCR, which this tool does not do.
Which programs open the result?
Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WPS Office, Google Docs and Apple Pages all open .docx files.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is read and the Word file is written in your browser; nothing leaves your device.
