General questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Every File Perks tool runs in your browser, on your own device. Your files are read, converted and saved locally; they are never sent to File Perks or anyone else.

Is File Perks free?

Yes. All tools are free to use, with no account and no watermark.

What is the largest file I can convert?

50 MB per file, up to 20 files (200 MB) at once, and images up to 50 megapixels. These limits keep your browser from running out of memory.

Which browsers work?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on computers and phones. Creating WebP files needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox; File Perks tells you if your browser cannot.

Will converting reduce the quality of my image?

PNG output is lossless. JPG and WebP are lossy: at 80–90% quality the change is hard to see, and lower settings trade detail for smaller files. Converting never adds quality that the original did not have.

What happens to transparency?

PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG cannot store it, so transparent areas are filled with a background colour you choose (white by default).

Why is my converted file larger than the original?

Lossless formats like PNG are bigger than JPG or WebP for photos, and an already well-compressed file may not shrink further. File Perks always shows the real sizes so you can keep whichever is better.

Is my photo's location data kept?

No. Converted files contain only the image. EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location is not copied.

Do I need an internet connection?

Yes, to open the pages: each tool loads its code from this site, and the HEIC decoder and the PDF engines download the first time you use them. The work itself happens on your device; your files are never sent over the connection.

Can File Perks unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?

No. Unlock PDF removes the password from a file you can open: you type the password, or the file only restricts printing or copying. It never guesses or cracks passwords.

Do I need to install anything?

No. File Perks works in your web browser; there is nothing to install.

What can I do with PDFs?

Merge, split, compress, rotate and reorder PDFs; remove or extract pages; add page numbers or a watermark; protect a PDF with a password or unlock one you know the password of; and turn images into a PDF or PDF pages into JPG, PNG or text. See all PDF tools.

Can I edit the text of a PDF or convert it to Word?

Not yet. File Perks works with whole pages (merge, split, rotate, compress, number, watermark, protect) and can take the text out of a PDF as plain text with PDF to Text.
