How to use the Edit PDF
- Choose a PDF or drop it on the box. Every page opens in the editor, with small pictures of the pages down the side.
- With "Edit text" on, the lines of the PDF are outlined: click one and retype it. Add new words, delete some, or change the font, size and colour.
- Use "Add text", "Image", "Signature", "Draw", "Shapes", "Highlight", "White-out" or "Table" for everything new. Drag to move, pull a handle to resize, and press Delete to remove.
- In the page list, turn, duplicate, delete or move pages, add a blank page, or bring in the pages of another PDF.
- Press "Download PDF". The changes are written into a new copy of your file.
Changing the words of a line. PDF files do not store paragraphs the way a word processor does: each line is placed on the page by itself. That is why File Perks lets you pick one line at a time. The line becomes a text box holding its words, at the same place and size, in the closest of the editor's fonts: Arimo for Arial and Helvetica, Tinos for Times New Roman, Carlito for Calibri, Caladea for Cambria and Cousine for Courier. Their letters have the same widths as those fonts, so a retyped line takes the same room. If the new words are longer, the box wraps them onto a second line.
The old words are taken out, not just hidden. When you download, the original words of every retyped line are removed from the page itself, so they no longer appear when someone selects or searches the text. A few files draw their text in a way that cannot be cut apart safely, for example inside a nested drawing. Those lines are covered with their own background colour instead, and the download message says so, because the old words are then still inside the file.
Adding things. New text can use 18 fonts, from plain office fonts to script and handwriting styles, with Urdu and Arabic in Noto Naskh. Pictures can be PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP, and a picture copied to the clipboard can be pasted straight onto the page. Shapes, lines, arrows, freehand drawing, highlighting and white-out each have their own colour and thickness, and every item can be brought to the front, sent behind, duplicated or deleted. Undo and redo keep the last 200 steps.
Quality of the result. Pages you did not change are kept exactly as they were, and the edited pages keep their original text, drawings and pictures: nothing is turned into a picture. Fonts you used are embedded in the file, which adds some size (tens of kilobytes for each font). Deleted pages and replaced text are left out of the new file, so removing pages makes it smaller. Bookmarks, links and form fields of the original stay in it.

Good to know
- Protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
- A scanned page is a picture of text: its words cannot be retyped, only covered with White-out and written over with Add text.
- The PDF's own fonts are not reused; the closest of the editor's fonts takes their place on a retyped line.
- Urdu and Arabic text is drawn as exact letter shapes: sharp in print, but it cannot be selected or searched.
- Characters none of the fonts have, such as emoji, are left out, and the download message says so.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add a word in the middle of a sentence?
Yes. Turn on "Edit text", click the line, put the cursor where the word should go and type it. The rest of the line moves along, as in any text box.
Why does my retyped line look slightly different?
The editor cannot reuse the fonts stored inside your PDF, so it uses the closest one it has. For Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, Cambria and Courier New the substitutes are made to the same letter widths; for other fonts, choose the nearest look from the font list.
How do I delete a line?
Click the line with "Edit text" on, select all its words and delete them. The emptied box stays, and on download the original line is removed. To delete a picture or a drawing that is part of the page, cover it with White-out.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The editor, its fonts and the PDF writer all run in your browser. The file never leaves your device.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The tools are touch-friendly and the page list opens from the "Pages" button. A large document is easier to edit on a bigger screen.
